Governor Seyi Makinde officially joins 2027 presidential race
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has officially declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election under the platform of the Allied Peoples Movement.
The governor made the announcement on Thursday, May 14, during a political rally held at the historic Mapo Hall in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

Makinde also unveiled the “Reset Nigeria Movement,” a campaign platform and mobilisation initiative designed to build nationwide support ahead of the next general election.
The movement includes a dedicated campaign website expected to coordinate political engagement and grassroots mobilisation across the country.
His declaration marks a major political shift, especially after officially leaving the Peoples Democratic Party, the platform under which he currently serves as governor.
Declaring his presidential ambition, Makinde said:
“I, Oluseyi Abiodun Makinde, Excellency, announce my candidacy for the position of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

Ahead of the 2027 elections, there have been alignment and realignment among politicians across different political parties for the soul of Nigeria.
Seyi Makinde’s strategic defection to APM
The governor’s decision to dump the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the platform under which he secured two terms in Oyo State, marks a significant shift in the country’s political dynamics.
His entry into the APM is expected to fundamentally reshape the party’s influence and offer a third-force alternative as the 2027 race gathers momentum.
During his declaration, Makinde emphasized his readiness for higher national leadership, citing his executive experience as evidence of his capability to lead the country.
Realignment ahead of 2027 elections
Makinde’s move comes amidst a broader season of political realignments, as heavyweight politicians across various parties begin to jostle for position ahead of the next general election.
By making his intentions clear in advance, the governor has set a high bar for other contenders.
As he transitions from a regional leader to a national candidate, the “Reset Nigeria” platform will likely test its strength against established political giants in the coming months.
