Defending champions secure quarter-final spot amid controversy
Defending champions Argentina staged one of the greatest comebacks in FIFA World Cup 2026 history after beating Egypt in the 90+2 minutes to qualify for the quarter final.
Trailing 2-0 until the 79th minute, the South American giants scored three goals in just 13 minutes to defeat Egypt 3-2.
However, explosive refereeing accusations from the Egyptian camp and shameful fan clashes in the stadium marred the legendary on-pitch drama.

Argentina’s stunning late fightback rescues Messi

Shameful fan violence in stands
Unfortunately, the incredible sporting spectacle took a very dark turn inside the stadium immediately after the final whistle.
Rowdy Argentine supporters began throwing beer cans and shouting nasty insults directly at the heartbroken Egyptian fans.
Sadly, this unacceptable behaviour repeated past patterns, mirroring previous tournament clashes where Argentine crowds targeted Cape Verde spectators.

Egypt fumes over biased refereeing in favour of Argentina
Following their painful elimination, the Egyptian camp launched a furious, highly explosive attack against the match officials.
Both players and coaching staff heavily criticised the referee and the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system.
They claimed officials disallowed a legitimate Egyptian goal and ignored crucial penalty checks that favoured their opponents.
“The referee is unfair,” Egyptian player Zizo stated angrily. “The cup is being given to Argentina.”
Egypt manager Hossa, Hassan alleged that there was noo fair play on the part of the referee and others. He said:
“We haven’t seen respect or fair play. A penalty was ruled out and a second (incident) that should have been checked for a penalty for us was not even checked by the VAR. A second goal was remarkably, for whatever reason, disallowed.”
“Life is unfair. The world is unfair. OK, but why isn’t there any fairness in sports? I’m not convinced by this outcome and by the way things unfolded in this match.”
Egypt manager alleges corporate favouritism
Furthermore, Egypt head coach Hossam Hassan directly alleged that powerful financial interests manipulated the tournament outcome.
He insisted his squad played the better football but faced artificial barriers designed to keep Messi in the tournament.
“There seems to have been pressure on the Argentinian side on the referee that has brought about this outcome.
The referee is unfair, God is sufficient for me and the best disposer of affairs. He’s wasting the effort of an entire nation. The cup is directed towards Argentina.”“It’s all about money,” Hassan remarked during his post-match press conference. “They want Messi to stay.”
