Grandfathers arrested for targetting secondary school students
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested two grandfathers in Umuahia, Abia State. Godfrey Orji, aged 84, and Godwin Obiora, aged 75, allegedly sold illicit drugs to teenage secondary school students.
Operatives raided Obiora’s patent medicine store on Club Road. They recovered 4.64 kilograms of opioids, including tramadol and diazepam.
Meanwhile, security guards at a local school caught Orji supplying drugs to two teenagers. A 15-year-old pupil confessed that the octogenarian routinely supplied him with substances to use and resell. Consequently, authorities have placed the affected teenagers on counselling and rehabilitation programmes.

International drug shipments intercepted in Lagos
In Lagos, NDLEA officers intercepted a synthetic cannabinoid consignment arriving from China at a courier firm. The dangerous psychoactive substance weighed 9.5 kilograms and was hidden inside a carton.
Additionally, operatives discovered 300 grams of “Loud”, a strong cannabis strain, concealed inside ladies’ handbags.
Furthermore, a raid on a wanted dealer’s home in Ajah led to the recovery of codeine and skunk. The suspect’s wife attempted to flush the incriminating drugs down the toilet during the raid. However, alert officers quickly thwarted her attempts. They subsequently recovered 22.5 kilograms of skunk from a minibus parked outside.
NDLEA in nationwide crackdowns and community sensitisation
The drug clampdown spread aggressively across other states. In Kogi, patrol officers intercepted a suspect carrying over one kilogram of methamphetamine inside custard containers. Furthermore, authorities in Ekiti arrested a wanted couple who had been on the run since March.
In Oyo State, operatives raided a house and arrested 75-year-old Tudun Olubiyi alongside two accomplices. They uncovered 1,416 kilograms of skunk hidden under layers of sawdust. Meanwhile, Edo State operatives successfully raided deep forests, destroying over four tonnes of illicit cannabis crops.
Alongside these crackdowns, the NDLEA intensified its War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) sensitisation campaign. They delivered educational lectures at various schools and communities nationwide. NDLEA Chairman Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd) commended the officers for successfully balancing strict supply reduction with vital community advocacy.
