Seun Okinbaloye rejects threat, defends press freedom

The Politics Today television host has said he is not afraid and will never be intimidated following remarks by Nyesom Wike.
Wike had earlier stated he would have “broken his TV screen and shot” the journalist over comments suggesting that a one-party system could threaten democracy in Nigeria.
Reacting on Sunday, April 5, Okinbaloye condemned such rhetoric and warned that it undermines democratic values.
“The fact remains that our democracy is in danger if we allow one-way traffic in balloting. This is not a warning to the opposition or ruling party. But to all Nigerians who believe in the development of our nation.”

Wike’s comment sparks criticism, Amnesty International reacts
The FCT Abuja minister’s statement triggered widespread backlash, with Amnesty International describing it as “reckless and violent language.”
Despite the controversy, Okinbaloye maintained a firm stance, emphasising that disagreement should never escalate into threats.
Reaffirming his commitment to journalism and holding those in power accountable, Okinbaloye said:
“Let me be clear: I am not afraid and I will never be intimidated.”
He also disclosed that Wike later reached out to him directly, clarifying that his statement was not intended as conveyed. However, Okinbaloye stressed that violent rhetoric has no place in a democratic society.
